The U.S. Department of Justice filed suit against the Alaska Division of Elections late Thursday, seeking to block the division from certifying the result of the state’s U.S. Senate election if the Democratic challenger, Mary Peltola, wins.

President Donald Trump told reporters on Friday in Florida that he ordered the lawsuit be filed.

“I’m the one that said, ‘do it,’” he said.

The Alaska Division of Elections and Lt. Gov. Nancy Dahlstrom acted incorrectly when they put disqualified Republican candidate Jose Tagle on the ballot for state House District 22, an Anchorage Superior Court judge said Thursday.

Judge Josie Garton’s decision, published in the late afternoon, means “Tagle’s election may not be certified if he does win a majority of votes in the general election,” she wrote.

COMMENTARY

By Kristopher Brown

For a time growing up, I called a rocket range home.

My late father, Neal Brown, directed Poker Flat Research Range outside Fairbanks for 18 years. To the scientists who traveled there, it was a place to send instruments into the northern lights. To me, it was part of childhood: familiar people doing remarkable things in a place where winter demanded as much ingenuity as the science itself.
