The nation of Taiwan is coming closer to a multibillion-dollar investment in the trans-Alaska natural gas pipeline and is preparing to buy as much as 30% of the pipeline’s production, its economic affairs ministry said Wednesday.

The announcement was short of the firm commitment that President Donald Trump and administration officials announced on Tuesday during a rally in Wasilla but would nevertheless represent a major step forward for the project.

One year since the remnants of Typhoon Halong ripped through coastal communities of Western Alaska, displacing an estimated 1,600 residents and prompting the largest mass evacuation of the region in state history, the recovery effort is ongoing and uncertain.

Today there is no official tally of how many residents are still displaced from their homes. But nearly 200 households continue to receive federal temporary housing assistance, according to state officials.

COMMENTARY

By Margaret Adsit

This summer, I stood with a landowner at the edge of a hayfield her parents cleared more than 60 years ago. Wisps of her grey hair caught in the wind, and her eyes narrowed as she looked out over her farmland ground, thinking about so many neighboring farms that have been converted to gravel pits and subdivisions.

“Converting this should be considered a sin,” she told me. “My parents would be sick to know what has happened to this valley. We need our farmers. We need our farmland.”
